Building Relationships And Volunteer Opportunities

while enriching the lives of both.

Zionsville is a wonderful community full of talented people. Zionsville Community Schools feels fortunate to have the community as a resource to enhance the quality education of our students. Community members are invited to be involved in our schools. The real-world ideas, lessons, and experiences that professionals share can expand and enhance classroom curriculum. To help match volunteers in the community with instructional opportunities in our schools, a database is being created by professionals.

Due to the importance of maintaining a safe environment for our students and staff, prior to being a volunteer/visitor in a building, the district requires that you complete a background check application (Indiana State Police Limited Background Check through Safe Visitor or a Safe Hiring Solutions Full Background check.  Both valid for 5 years).

Volunteer/Visitor Guidelines:
  1. All Volunteers/Visitors please sign-in and sign-out at the front office. A visitor badge must be worn at all times.

  2. Volunteers/Visitors are not expected to replace the instructional staff, however, each volunteer/visitor should become familiar with classroom and building rules governing student conduct.
  3. Confidentiality is a must. Any information regarding academic performance and behavior is not to be shared by the volunteer/visitor. It is the responsibility of school personnel to inform parents of matters relating to their child’s education.
  4. All Volunteers/Visitors must review and electronically sign off (one time only) on the bullying/confidentiality video found on the volunteer webpage.

Examples include: (but not limited to):
  • Lunch Guests

  • Concession Stand Workers

  • Guest Speakers

  • Carnival, Field Day, Party Helpers

  • Book Fair Sales People

  • Athletic Ticket Sales

  • Dance Chaperones

  • Z Run Volunteers

  • Swim Timers

  • Library Helpers

  • Clerical Assistants (ie. copy moms & room parents)

  • After Prom Workers

  • Jog A Thon

Volunteers/Visitors who will have direct student contact under limited supervision or unsupervised, direct contact with students in various settings, will now be required to submit information for a Full Background Check. The volunteer/visitor will pay $15.95 and will expire after 5 years.  There may be instances where an additional fee would be needed for an expanded search for counties not participating in the above mentioned check. Safe Hiring Solutions will notify individuals for authorization needing the additional fee.  Full Background Checks take at least  7-10 days to process.

  • Volunteer Coaches

  • Tutors

  • Field Trip Chaperones

  • Out of Town/Overnight Chaperones

  • Working with a group or individual students out of the classroom for remediation work

Community members:  

Please know that even if you do not have a child currently enrolled as a ZCS student that you are invited to volunteer your time to enhance the learning opportunities of our students.

Once background checks are submitted and completed, they will be entered into a system maintained by the volunteer coordinator for the district.  There is not a notification system in place to make the applicant aware of completion.  The applicant will only be contacted if there is an issue with the background check.
