On Friday, November 13, ZMS Orchestra and Tri-M Students visited Kentucky’s Morehead
State University. Tri-M advisor, Kathleen Swayze, had been invited to guest-conduct
a middle school string festival and since she doesn’t trav anywhere without her Tri-M
and orchestra students, they loaded up the tour bus and hit the road.
The dilemma was this: how would the Tri-M students spend their day while the orchestra
students were in rehearsal? MENC suggested Kathleen contacted Morehead State University’s
Susan Creasap, advisor of the CMENC Chapter and Associate Director of Bands at Morehead,
for assistance. Professor Creasap rolled out the red carpet for the Tri-M students!
Starting with college students leading the Tri-M members and parent chaperons on
a campus tour, and ending with cheering on the school’s football team, the day was
action packed – thanks to Professor Creasap. One Tri-M student had a cousin attending
Morehead, and the cousin arranged for the school’s mascot to visit with our students!
Thank you MENC for helping to make this connection with the faculty at Morehead
State University, and thank you for helping to create a truly meaningful experience
for the students!
